Is "Wish" and Apple application?

Wish is part of the Tcl/Tk package that is included in OS X by Apple, and also in apps that use Tcl/Tk for their GUI.

The name means "windowing shell", it's the interactive shell for working with Tcl/Tk GUI apps. The command line program "tclsh" is the corresponding terminal/command line shell.

wish is part of the Tk.framework located in the System folder. Also, wish is part of the BSD layer. Some application is either using either of these or possibly it's own framework to produce a GUI application.

That's because, by design, Spotlight doesn't search </System> or </Library>, or indeed many other locations on the boot volume. And not all applications are in </Applications> or <~/Applications>. If you want a complete list of applications, launch System Profiler ( > About This Mac > More Info), scroll to Software, click on Applications, then wait until the list is populated. Click on an item, and you'll find version information and its precise location.

The reason is simple -- CSV files are plain text files (those generated from Excel still have the type signature "TEXT", as they should), and Wish registers itself as a viewer of text files. Its Info.plist says

<string>text/plain</string>

...

<key>CFBundleTypeOSTypes</key>

...

<string>TEXT</string>

...

This means that Wish should appear in the Open With list for any file which has the type signature "TEXT" or the MIME type plain text. TextMate doesn't come into the picture.

Is Wish an Apple application?

Well actually yes. On my 10.6.5 I found it burried in:

/System/Library/Frameworks/Tk.framework/Versions/8.4/Resources/Wish.app

So I assume if anything causes it to launch it will be recorded in Launch Services and thus a candidate app for appropriate files listed by Get Info.

Also in there is,

/System/Library/Frameworks/Tk.framework/Versions/8.4/Resources/Wish Shell.app

I mentioned TextMate because it was mentioned in that link to that other discussion. And out of curiousity I downloaded TextMate 1.5.10 and fished around in it and found a line burried deep within its bundle:

I don't speek this particular language but I assume under some circumstance TextMate will run the Wish Shell app. Of course I don't know the Wish Shell's relation to the Wish app.

This is a trivial detail, but, well, actually, no. The original Mac OS X port of Wish was made by Apple, but that was something like ten years ago. The versions installed on the OP's system no longer belong to Apple.

Ok, ok. My meaning was it is an app that is installed with the Tk.framework as part OS X. I wasn't thinking of its origins.

Also, I also just noticed that Wish Shell.app is just a symlink to Wish.app.
