Q: APSDaemon.exe uses excessive CPU resources

On my dual-core WinXP system, APSDaemon.exe (the wireless sync service) regularly uses all the cycles on one CPU (it runs at 50% CPU utulization in Task Manager).  If I restart iTunes, the utilization drops to zero for a while, but soon rises back up.  I have iTunes 10.5.2.11, and "Sync over Wireless" is disabled for my iPhone.  I also connect a shuffle and a nano, but neither supports wireless, so they shouldn't matter (shouldn't...).

I've disabled automatic start of APSDaemon at boot in my registry but iTunes starts it when it runs anyhow.  So I've renamed the .exe file, an inelegant solution at best.

Sadly, Apple doesn't let me report this as a problem, so I'm reduced to complaining here.  I expected better of them.

Ideally, we should be able to turn off services we don't want to use, like wireless sync, so we can reduce iTunes' bloated footprint.  And when they are enabled, but not in use, they should sit there quietly, of course.

I have the same problem. I have re-installed Itunes and no luck with that. Just keep killing it, as it slows my machine to a crawl!

Come on Apple, sort it out!!

Deleted it. But I plug in to charge/sync and don't use the cloud.

After the latest update failed to fix this issue, I decided to take more drastic action.  Since I don't use the wifi sync option, I decided to prevent the process from running.  Rather than delete the file, I tried something easily reversible by changing the name.  I went to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support", found APSDaemon.exe, and changed the filename to APSDaemonX.exe.

Now APSDaemon never runs, and there have been no errors or other ill effects from iTunes so far.  I expect I'll have to repeat this procedure every time I install an iTunes update if the problem hasn't been fixed.

Yeah, this worked for me too.

I wonder if I should do that with the AppleMobileDevice.exe too.

Another problem, and I'm ;not trying to hijack the topic.

Yep worked for me on XPSP3 had to do 2 things.

    1 close all programs

2 open task manager and end task the Apple mobile device service and the APSDaemon.exe processes.

3 open CMD prompt / run 'netsh winsock reset' (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259 for you windows version)

the APSDaemon.exe service starts up when you boot up so it needs stopping

4 open CMD promt and type REGEDIT then find the key

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

find the entry  APSDaemon in your list

right click the key and select Delete. This will stop the service from running at start up.

    reboot the PC

    start ITunes then connect IPAD/POD/PHONE

    All works fine

If you do use the wirless sync then i guess it wont work now unless you restart the APSDaemon service.

if you want to have this start at boot again you will need to add the reg key again this would be done i guess by either manually adding the key in regedit

    New REG_SZ key called APSDaemon then value "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\APSDaemon.exe"

or you may be able to uninstall/install Itunes again which may add the key again.

Can't say if you will get this issue again.

be carefull when editing the registry http://support.microsoft.com/kb/136393

I take no responsibility for this other than to say it worked for me.

So, I've come back to share my simple fix, and it will allow wireless synch with no hangups.

I'm running Win XPSP3.  I typically leave my computer on all the time, so I don't have to do this often.

    1.  I open Windows Task Manager.  2. I select apsdaemon.exe.  3. I End Process.

Then, daily as I walk through the door after work, and get the laptop out of standby, iTunes is already detecting my iPhone 3gs.  I go to Settings in my iPhone, and to Wireless Synch in General, and choose to Synch Now.  No trouble, and no more 100% usage issues.  I totally ignore AppleMobileDevices.exe.  I have yet to catch it being an issue, so I leave it alone.

Even if I restarted my computer every day, this is still a literal 5 Second Fix that is far easier than renaming things in program folders, for those of you who don't want to.

    So,

Ctrl+Alt+Del  (1.)  ... then  2. apsdaemon.exe  3. End Process   If you''re experiencing high running at that moment, it's going to stop immediately.

That's all. And synch from any room, or even outside.  It works for me without being connected to power as it suggests is necessary... it's not.

I agree with LivingTheTrek - if you want to sync wirelessly, that's pretty much the way to go.  If you don't want to sync wirelessly, I'd recommend renaming the file.  Using REGEDIT for this seems like overkill to me, but to each his own.

Note: It probably hasn't got anything to do with antivirus, as I just tried this:

    1) uninstalling antivirus

    2) reboot

    3) open iTunes

    4) wait 5 minutes so we're sure it's properly loaded

    5) put computer in standby

    6) wake it up again

Voila: 50% CPU (all of the cycles for one of the cores)

System: Dual core 2.2 GHz Apple MacBook with 1 GB RAM, running WinXP SP3 Danish

    ---

I'll rename the file as I don't need wifi sync.

    Try it.

It was BMI in my case, causing the APSDaemon issue, the mobile device issue, and the blank itunes store issue.

Hm - nope, I got "MSAFD Tcpip (TCP/IP)" as they suggest it should be on an unmodified system.

I have done all of the things in this and many other threads. I can only kill the task or reboot. I am starting to wonder if Apple is using my hardware fro malicious purposes. I am not volenteering my computer for their distributed computing experiemnt.

I filed bug # 10771323 with Apple about this. You must have an Apple ID to view the bug.

It appears you have to be a registered Developer as well as have an Apple ID to follow the bug reference.

As another sufferer who leaves his old XP system on all the time, so far stopping the Daemon process in Task Manager works adequately. Plan B is to rename the file.
