In transferring data to a a new MacBook Pro from a MacBook using migration assistant, the progress seems to have stopped (for about 3 hours) and still shows 2 hours and 16 minutes remaining. The blue progress bar looks active but hasn't moved in the last 3 hours.

If via wireless, that's very slow and unreliable. 😟

I am using ethernet as the MacBook I am transferring from does not have firewire. I interrupted (shut down both coputers) and went throught the migration assistant process again. It is now in the process of transferring, albiet slowly. I will know in the morning if the second time worked.
The second attempt to transfer data using migration assistant got stuck again. The remaining time was different, but the progress bar got stuck in exactly the same place (about 40% completed). I have an appointment with at the genius bar as I don't know what else to try.
There might be a problem with the directory on the old Mac. Try verifying the old Mac's internal HD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
Another option would be to transfer from Time Machine or "bootable clone" backups of the old Mac on an external HD.

It turned out thjat there was a bad sector on the old Mac that was preventing the completion Migration Assistant. I wound up manually transferring over as much of the information off the old drive. I got help at the Apple genius bar to transfer the old e-mail files.
