Editing locked files

I don't know if this is the correct forum, but i recently purchased Borderlands:Game of the Year from the Mac App Store. As any other curious person would do, i opened the config files to look at the code. When i attempted to alter the code, it said it was locked, but one of the options available was to unlock. So i tried pressing that, but then it said that the volume was locked and read-only. When i went to look at the sharing preferences in the "get info" window, it said I had the ability to read and write. Is there any way of unlocking the files for me to edit?

It sounds as though you are trying to edit a file on a read-only volume. 'Locked' is more of a discouragement than an obstruction - anyone with the right permissions can unlock a file. but a file on a read-only volume is uneditable no matter what.

if you are running this application off of a downloaded disk image, copy it to your hard drive. once it's copied you should be able to edit the file.

well, it sounds as though the game authors would very much like you to not mess with this data file. I'm not sure exactly what they've done (there are three or four likely options), but if they are being determined about it it's unlikely you'll succeed without some non-trivial effort. So what are you trying to do? cheat the game? unlock unpaid-for features?
