iMovie appears to have created projects out of clips

iMovie suddenly going v. slow, even after re-booting. There should be no memory or processing capacity problem. Also in iDVD there appears out of nowhere hundreds of movie projects which were originally just clips. Any suggestions before I tear my hair out (what little there is left of it...)
