iMessage delivering to more than one device on same account

I have my son's iPod touch linked to my iTunes account.....but any iMessages I send or receive are being delivered to it...I obviously don't want them to be!!! I know I can turn off iMessage on one or both of the devices...but surely I shouldn't have to do that? He's only 9, and kinda likes the idea he can message me whenever he wants! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

iMessage is working as designed. It is supposed to route all messages to all devices setup with the same AppleID.

If you want to iMessage each other you need independent AppleIDs setup for iMessage on your own devices.

You can still share the same AppleID for iTunes Store purchases though.

However, you should be aware that the minimum age for an Apple ID is 13 years old. I don't know how or if Apple verifies this requirement though.

Thanks for your replies. It IS allowing us to message each other...his messages come to me via his mail address....the problem is that messages I send to or receive from other people (via iMessage) are going to his iPod too. I'm stumped on this one!

All i want is a wee button that says......do you want your imessages to go to all devices on this account? NO/YES haha! Is that too much to ask?! 😁

Surely all devices have different ID's of their own though, one that makes them unique, irrespective of the apple ID linked to them. I mean the actual physical device.

You think if threatening messages were reported to the police they wouldn't be able to tell whether they'd come from the phone or the pod? I mean....there must be some unique identifier in place.
