Can the iPod Touch be a Phone?

Hello-

I am looking for a camera that can take HD videos. I thought well, duh, what about the iPod Touch. I read a post that some guy called his friend from his iPad Touch. Is the iPod Touch a Phone too? what carrier does it use? Does the iPod Touch have 3G,4G any type of wifi? How does one get this hooked up? Is it hard to get hooked up to the internet using the iPod Touch?

thanks

No, an iPod Touch is not a phone. It has no cellular capability. However, apps like Skype or FaceTime enable you to talk to other Mac users or non-Mac users over the internet using WiFi. Skype will let you call a regular telephone but you must purchase access time on a charge card with specific VOIP providers.

Just for awareness, the camera in the iPod Touch is less than one megapixel. It does 720p video, but still photos are not the greatest.

And also for awareness, there is a product which attaches to the iPod Touch to give you cellular voice capabilities and (slow) internet. Since that product does require you to jailbreak your iPod Touch it can't be discussed further here.

I can make very clear outgoing phone calls on my iPod Touch 4 using an ooma mobile app which works when I have a wifi connection.

I am able to do this because I own an ooma Core telephone device (a VOIP system with no monthly telephone charges) , which I use in place of a landline, and I purchased some extra bells and whistles from ooma for a small monthly charge. The extra features include the capcaity to use ooma mobile, and they also include some free telephone time/minutes when I call from the iPod Touch.
