I know this is an old thread, but for anyone who is going to restore their iPod, iPhone, or iPad, learn from me. What you are going to do is restore the device from your computer and not the device, as you might get stuck on the spinning wheel of death like myself. If this has already happened to you, take your device and plug it into a wall adapter, best if used sync cable and wall adapter made by apple. One you have done that, you are going to put it into dfu mode. What that is is it puts the iPod into recovery mode, you are going to do this by holding down the power/ sleep button for 3 seconds, hold the home button down for 10 seconds while still holding the power button down, then release the power button while still holding the home button down for another 15 seconds. Once you have done this your device should now be I dfu mode. You will know this because the device will look turned off and the wheel should be gone, do not try to turnyour device on as it may cause more problems. Next, you will plug your device into your computer and iTunes should recognize it as a device in recovery mode. If it does, click the restore button on your computer and your device will now be properly restoring. You can then choose to restore it from a previous back up or start as a new device (iPhone, iPod, and iPad). Hope this helps everyone in the future with this problem.

my device is 5s with iOS 7.0.6

1- install tinyumbrella

2- plug your device

3- run tinyumbrella as administrator

4- go the advanced tab

5- uncheck all the boxs

6- click exit restore

i didn't believe my iphone got back as it was and didn't erase anything I guess at this step which is the same as your the restore haven't been started yet
