Q: Received iPad 2 want to give my iPad 1 to husband.  How do I delink accounts so he can set up his email, customize his apps?  Would like to be able to share movies and music.

Hello.  Received the iPAD2 for Christmas and wanted to give the iPAD1 to my husband.  How do we de-link the iPAD1 so he can set up his email and customize this own apps?  We would like to be able to share books, music, and videos.   Thanks.

Are you using the same login on the same computer?  Different logins?  Different computers?

You'll notice that each iPad is identified by name.  See image below.  Highlight the appropriate iPad and configure iTunes the way that you wish.  The second image below is an example for apps.  You'll see something similar for movies, TV shows, etc.

The only minor problem is app updating.  IF you choose to do it from inside iTunes, it's a minor nuisance.  Each app is permanently associated with whatever Apple ID was originally used to obtain it.  If you're logged in to the wrong ID, you'll need to log out and back in again.  On the bright side, if you update from the iPad, all you need is the password for the correct ID.  The iPad takes care of the rest.

Mail is a special case.  I use Mac Mail and the setup is pretty much automatic.  What are you using?

If you want to share movies and other content, both devices should share the same iTunes account and Apple ID.  This way, you'll also be able to share Apps, which is nice.  If you buy a paid for app, he can use it.  And if he does, you can use it.  Both devices can be maintained separately in the same iTunes account and both can be synced separately.  Just name each device and choose which apps, music, photos etc., you each want on each device.  If you set them up on different iTunes accounts, you will not be able to share movies, apps, etc.

No.  The same ID is not required.  I have two IDs and I have no problem syncing a mix/match on my iPad and my iPod.  Look at the image that I posed earlier.  The AARP apps were obtained using one ID and the Adobe apps were obtained using the other ID.

The same mix/match capability exists with movies, TV shows, music and actually EVERYTHING thats in the iTunes library.  In fact, all syncing is performed without regard to the Apple ID that was used to obtain the items.

On the iPhone/iPad, the Mail program can take multiple accounts, and you can easily add/delete accounts. So you can delete your email account from your iPad, give it to your husband, and he can add his to it. When you get your iPad, you add your email account to that one. Or, because it can take multiple accounts, either iPad could have both your email accounts on them. If you wanted to be able to read each other's email, not sure if that's what you want... If you each want your own email only, just reconfigure Mail so that each of you only uses your own email account on your own iPad.

I'm on thing ice with the email as I don't use either of them.  My guess (and it's really a guess) is that you need to set them up in the iPads and don't sync them to iTunes (leave the box unchecked):

Then, using the different Apple IDs, use iCloud to sync the mail separately for each of you.

That is correct but the issue is the sync with iTunes and that's where I believe that mail is a minor issue.  That's why I recommended NOT syncing with iTunes and using iCloud separately for each device/account combination.

You can not give the music to your mom because you don't own it.  You merely paid for the right to use (listen to) the music.

One legal (and really slick) solution is to use "Family Sharing."  That way, anything (apps, music, etc.) that either of you obtain through the Apple iTunes Store can be obtained by the other without paying a second time.
