Is the firmware up to date?

Try TV in standby not off?

It used to work that the TV could be off but a recent firmware update broke that for many - it is supposedly fixed in current firmware but I've not tested this myself.

Turn off TV and connect optical to an amp or device that can play the audio.

You could make some black 'pictures' and use them for a slideshow on the TV.
