E-Mail settings in Lion gone awry

I use ATT UVerse for Internet, and today all of my email programs have gone crazy. First the programs I use on my MAC and on a PC:

MAC: Mail and Thunderbird

PC: Thunderbird, Opera, SeaMonkey

I had not changed any settings, so today when I kept getting messages like: "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.att.yahoo.com responded incorrect user or password". Also, "login to server failed, please enter new password".

ATT support <or lack thereof> was no help as they claim that they do not support ANY third party e-mail programs, only Att/Yahoo web mail, which I have never used. But I could get third party support if I sign up with a fee based service they have. <Surprise, surprise>

Funny thing is though, the mail on my Iphone and my Ipad still work with the original settings, which are:

Incoming server: pop.att.yahoo.com

Outgoing server: smtp.pop.yahoo.com

The above settings have always worked on all of my mail programs, so I am at a loss as to why all of a sudden, they don't.

So what I am asking is, whoever here, if anyone, uses ATT Uverse and can tell me what settings you use for the above e-mail programs, it would be appreciateed.

P.S. After being on internet chat with their second tier support for over an hour and changeing settings, the final thing he told me was that, he could not provide any ore info and I would have to sign up for paid tech su pport.

It's enough to make me want to cancel all of my ATT accounts and either go to Comcast or Verizon.

Try this:

Email server settings (POP and SMTP)

AT&T email server settings are needed if you intend to use an email program (e.g. Outlook) with your AT&T email accounts. The current settings are displayed in the table below. If you only use AT&T Webmail to access your AT&T email accounts, these settings are not needed and you can access your mail by logging in at https://login.yahoo.com/.

If you signed up for a free att.net email account after 6/12/11, you will not be able to use an email program (e.g., Outlook) with your AT&T email account.

Note: AT&T's POP/SMTP settings have recently changed to inbound.att.net and outbound.att.net. However, if you are using the old settings, they will continue to work.

The following mail server settings will work with all AT&T email domains: @ameritech.net, @att.net, @bellsouth.net, @flash.net, @nvbell.net, @pacbell.net, @prodigy.net, @sbcglobal.net, @snet.net, @swbell.net, @wans.net.

Email Program Settings Field:Enter:
Incoming (POP)inbound.att.net
Outgoing (SMTP)

outbound.att.net

(requires authentication)
Incoming mail server:POP3
Incoming/Outgoing User Name:Full AT&T email address, including domain (e.g., test@att.net, test@bellsouth.net)
Incoming mail port #:995, secure connection (SSL) checked
Outgoing mail port #465, secure connection (SSL) checked

Note: When updating the secure server settings, check the SSL check box first and then update the port number if necessary.

Message was edited by: Glenn Leblanc BTW: This comes directly from the AT&T help site. Go to help and search Email Server Settings. The reps should have suggested this.

More info:

In order for your account to be POP, those settings need to be applied at the website account setings, which yours probably are since you had been getting mail before.

Many people don't know, but you can IMAP your AT&T mail in your mail program:

Server Settings:

inbound mail: imap.mail.yahoo.com set port 993 SSL

outbound mail: smtp.mail.yahoo.com use default port setting SSL Authentication Password

Glenn,

Thanks for the quick answer. I did change the settings as you instructed, and I am receiving and sending mail, the only thing that is weird is, whenever I open, or write, I still get the following:Sending of Password did not succeed.Mail server inbound.att.net responded incorrect username or password.

I just click on cancel instead of repeating the password and it all seems to work. It is very annoying.

Quit Mail. Open Keychain application and locate and remove all passwords for incoming and outgoing servers for that account. When you open mail, it will ask for the password. Save it and store in keychain. When you send a message, it will do the same and store it in keychain. Recheck your preferences and the passwords should be populated int the Account for incoming and smtp.

You may want to update the other devices to the new settings also.

Glenn,

I feel like I am about two years behind, but now is the time for me to update my Apple Mail 5.3 for AT&T. I found the Mail 4.X instructions on the AT&T website and thought they looked close. The first thing it says to do is verify that the account type is AT&T.net.pop. Mine is swbell.net and I can not change the Account Type. Do I need to, or if I just change the fields to the new settings will I be OK? I have until 12/11/13.

Thanks

All the server settings should still be the same even though it's been 2 years since I put those in this discussion.

Whatever name is listed as the account type doesn't matter. As long as you are still using the same type account, you can just change the settings and it should work. So you can change the settings for a POP account. But if you are changing from POP to IMAP, then the settings will be different and you will need to create a new IMAP account.

It would probably just be easier to create a new account. That way you can test it without messing with the old one. It's been several years since I used Lion OS, but this should still work like on the newer OS. When you add a new mail account, the first window after selecting a carrier such as Yahoo or other is your name and password. Hold the option key down before hitting next or continue. This will bring up other options and let you choose exactly the type of account you are creating (IMAP, POP3, etc.).

Once you get the new account working with the correct settings, you can delete the other.
