Im having the same problem, wifi is on and working fine, recipients wifi is working too yet our imessages hang, say not delivered, some actually are but still say not delivered, some just send as text, some do nothing at all! Its tetchy all the time and has been going on like this for ages now and getting worse, ive reset network settings, turned imessage on and off etc. looks like no one can come up with an answer for this problem so i would say its definatly a software issue, please sort it out apple.

Hi butler, I know that facetime will only work when both are connected to wifi, some even work with 3g but mine doesnt, i have to have mine switched off as if 3g switched on i lose the facility to have any calls or texts messges , my friend who has iphone 4s can have his 3g switched on, most weired!. Its definatley apples fault, they need to sort it out

Your iphone will have a wireless icon up, situated to the left of the time, facetime wont work without wifi, imessage however can work on 3g (for some people) and on wifi. If your imessage is working correctly then messages you send will be in a blue bubble, green if they are sent as a normal text. Im my case my wifi is on and working fine but still imessage plays up.
