Skype, SoulSeek etc not downloading?

Hi there; I just bought my powerbook (my first mac ever) from a friend last week, and I am trying to download both skype and soulseek. However, both will tell me they are downloading but when I look for them in the 'downloads' dialog box under tools (or on my desktop), they are nowhere to be found. Any ideas on where they could be??? It's driving me NUTS! thanks, pike.

Did you try really basic stuff like doing a search (in the Finder, go to File > Find)?

What are you using to download them, your browser? Be more specific if possible. Try looking at the downloads window and see what it says (in Firefox it's Tools menu > Downloads. I forget in Safari but it's similar)

When you do the search, click the + button and a second field will appear. Change it to VISIBILITY and choose INVISIBLE AND VISIBLE. It will broaden your search a little bit.

yes, that is the first thing i did (look in my downloads box, under firefox tools), and the download box is empty except for this one other thing I did manage to get somehow. But skype and soulseek are nowhere to be found. Unless there's another way to check if things are downloading in my browser. But I think that what you're talking about is exactly what I've been doing. It's really doing my head in, cause now I'm worried that I bought a lemon! Any other ideas?!

No, this is strange, unless it's just something you don't realize you're not doing properly.

What are the extensions of these two things you're trying to download? They're likely .SIT or .DMG but it could be another.

Try Right-clicking the link to the download and choose SAVE LINK AS and then choose where you want it to download, and see what happens. I gather you're using Firefox; the downloads window show open within a couple of seconds of the download beginning.

You could even just pass me the link where you're trying to download from, I'll see what happens when I go.

Hi! Geez, sorry it took me so long to write back- I actually thought I had done that but forgot that for some reason I got distracted the other day and never ended up sending the reply- d'oh!
Okay, so to answer your suggestions:
yes, I am using firefox. When I try to "right-click" (I say this cause, of course, I am not actually right clicking) it gives me the option to "save page as" but not "save link as"; which makes me think it's a dead link or something, but then at the top it does indeed say that it's downloading. So I don't know. I feel like I must have 50 copies of skype downloads nestled away somewhere in my computer but I just can't seem to find them! It's terrible!
I'm not sure how to determine what the extension is for skype or soulseek; here is the link for the skype download page, though: http://www.skype.com/products/skype/macosx/downloading.html
And again, every time I check the downloads box it has other stuff I've downloaded but not skype (or soulseek). I dunno. If you're still out there, I would really love it if you can help me solve this mystery! Thanks again! Pike.

Oh, yeah, and one more piece of (potentially helpful?!) info: when I click on the "download now" link, for a split second the screen tells me that the download has been sent somewhere called "speed downloads." However, a search of my computer has failed to find a folder by that name. I don't know. Like I said, I'm totally new to Mac still so I am just barely figuring out how to do the basics! I guess I'm learning the hard way on some of this! okay- bye & thanks again.
