One hour 25 minutes won't fit on a single layer

Hey People,

Using Toast 7, I get the error that 1:25 min. won't fit on a single layer Verbatim. ???

It is an export from FCE with lots of editing if that makes a difference.

iDVD is not much use; it spits out blank disks during multiplexing stage but pretends to keep burning,

a common problem I know but I have never been able to fix it.

Thanks for any insight,

Al

Hi

This is my notes on first part - From FC to iDVD (or Toast™)

FCE/P to iDVD

Several things

• How to go from FCE/P to iDVD

• Free space on Start-up hard disk

• Encoding

• Brand and type of DVDs used

• Burn speed set

• iDVD BUG

• Chapters

How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do

• Disable Screen and Energy saver

• IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down

• Export out as a QuickTime .mov file

• Select with Mark - Chapter Mark

• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)

• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)

This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.

Free space on Start-up hard disk

I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)

Encoding

• I use Pro Quality encoding

Brand and type of DVDs used

• I use Verbatim

• I use DVD-R

Burn speed set

• I set down this to x4 (or x1)

iDVD BUG

• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to

the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither

of them will work.

Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.

Use of Chapters

• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !

• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self

• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition

(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks

Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want

them except at very beginning - still)

Material used to build movie

• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)

• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes

• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc

Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.

from post ??

May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

ey Bengt,

Thanks for all that info...

I typically do MOST of your tips.

The only things I don't do out of that hole list is mix down audio, setting burn speed to 4 or 1x, disable screen saver, ( I do turn off energy saver but not sreen).

I always use Verbatim but a couple of times lately the MBPro spit those out during multiplexing with nothing on them. I then put in a Memorex RW and it worked !!! God iDVD is a mystery and I wish Apple would kill it.

I don't see how mixing down the audio could make a diff but the other 2 I see potential probs. I'll try a mix down.

I did burn the stated project using Toast 7 with external burner and my iMac G4 using a self contained 19gig file copied over from the MB Pro. But this burn was to a DUAL Layer disk which is not ideal as the customer has problems with Dual layer working on their DVD players.

Still no idea why my 1 hr. 25 min. won't fit on a single layer.

I'll try some of your methods tomorrow.

thanks for all,

Al

reg. Chapter in very beginning

• No not at very beginning or a few sec in - iDVD set's this by it self and it will show up in iDVD Menu as Start (or alike) - But if You set it iDVD get's confused and start's to ill behave.

reg. Multiplex Errors (or related)

• This can be so many things - but a very common one can easily be cured for.

In iDVD - turn on Show TV-Safe Area

Move all buttons, texts and pictures well within this border (can't even touch it ! )

So I can re-label the chapter title in iDVD menu?

Will try the safe area tip.

I did figure out why the 1:25 wouldn't fit. I had checked something wrong within the Toast interface.

But my burner or iDVD (MB Pro) has some problem ......

Is there some maintenance or disk fix I can use to check it?

What is working:

exporting a QT self contained from FCE to my iMac G4 and then burning with Toast 7 using LaCie external burner. The burn takes a long time but it is working and frees up my MB Pro.

Tahnks,

Well I thought that the method I described above was working but it is not. A couple of disks almost worked.

One disk only burned audio no video and the other encountered some error with about 10 mins left. The first hour or so look good and then wham the crazy world of making DVD's reared its ugly head.

I really need to sit down and come up with some equipment and software that work.

It is due to the most intelligent step Apple ever taken (at least since SmallTalk = Graphic User Interface and the Mouse - both from Xerox Parc.™) and that was when taking the step to Mac OS X - which in reality is UNIX and as so behaves like it and that means.

• Application makes lot's of temporary files (temp. files) during process - AND ALSO -

• Mac OS X - makes a great lot's of them too

And space for these temp. files must be taken on the Mac OS (Start-Up) hard disk and can not be addressed elsewhere. So even if it looks empty - in reality it's crowded. AND So Important that it is to be there.

So if you are burning a big file you need an equal amount of space for those temp files ?

I get it , maybe.

I am currently trying to burn using Toast and the iMac's internal drive.

It is multiplexing and buring really fast just like when using the external drive.

Maybe that is why it only burned the Audio (No Video) both to a verbatim and a memorex -RW ???

Mysteryies upon mysteries...

Thanks,

THinking out loud....Well a little investigating...

Toast is only burning the audio for this particular file because within the Toast/Edit menu it is showing a video file/frame size of something like 0 by 20. Another words for some reason the frame size has been shrunk by Toast to that size. As I checked a previous movie that I did burn and it showed a video size correcly as 720 x 480. And that DVD turned out fine except for the multiplex error near the end where it went blank.

Why this is happening is a mystery????
Wait I think I knwo why.

Could it be that when I exported the movie from FCE on my MBPro that I exported DIRECTLY to the iMac instead of exporting it to MBPro desktop and then copying it over????

When I check the movie file with QT it is fine 720 x 480.

So I know WHAT is happening but not WHY.

I described my way - at the very start of this Q.

Don't know any better way to do it.

Sorry

About free space - Yes 25Gb is my minimum for a SL-DVD with miniDV tape material interlaced SD-video for two hours. If You use HD-material and DL-DVDs this needed space can increase to 4-5 times more for HD and x2 for DL = 200Gb minimum - And this can be made even worse by forcing iDVD to use codecs that it first has to de-code the material to be able to use it and then need of space get's colossal.
