I cannot believe that there is no way for me to buy a Mac app for someone else to download and install. As a shareholder, I'm appalled.

I believe that's only usable through the iTunes store, not the Mac App store.
My apologies, you are correct. I had apps for iOS devices on the brain.
If it's possilble to gift any media from either the iTunes or Mac App Store if you click the price or Free there's a downward facing arrow to the right.
If it's possible to gift that particular app, then you'll see "gift this app": or song, or album etc.
Some third party developers may not support gifting.
