I have set default alerts on iCal and on the Calendar for iPhone but neither work.
This almost makes my phone useless.
Go to you settings and look at the notifications option then locate the calender and set it to update and notify you as you please.

How can I get this to apply to events coming from Facebook or Meetup?
I have the same problem. Can´t get mi Iphone 5S to notify me of calendar events. I have to manually select the alerts for every event separately.
When I go to Settings - Notification Center - Calendar - Alerts It doesnt give me the option to lets say, set it for "remind me 15 mins before, and when the event starts" - THis i can do manually for each event, but i want it to be a default setting for all events on the iphone.
