Spilled water on MacBook Air - safe to use after a week?

Last Friday I spilled a glass of water all over my MacBook Air's keyboard. I jumped up, tipped the laptop over to get as much water off as possible, and dried off the outside. I took it in to Apple immediately and was told it needed so many repairs, that it would cost more than the laptop itself. The guy who looked at my Air was able to turn it on, but the monitor was flickering and had horizontal lines. He took it apart and said the motherboard was fine, but I would need a new logic board, speakers, screen, etc. and said I should be able to get my files off onto an external hard drive. Since it was such a costly repair that I couldn't go for, I didn't get a list of everything that had to be replaced.

When I got it home, I wasn't able to power it on like he could. I let it sit on my dresser all week, open and upside down, to let it dry and allow any extra water to drip out the front. Tired of looking at it, tonight I decided to try one more time and turn it on, and it did! I was able to email myself some important files that I thought I would never see again, so programs and internet worked. The monitor seemed completely fine, the brightness goes up and down normally, the speakers work, and I didn't notice any problems with the keyboard.

It seems to be completely fine, but I'm a bit worried about whether or not it's safe to use, and if there's anything I should be looking out for. At the Apple store I was told that it needed so much, but maybe it's fine for now? If I am able to use it, should I be thinking about replacing it anyway? I'll be wanting to use it next fall for school. Sorry for the huge wall of text, I thought it would be best to know as much as possible.

Thanks.

I can add a story to this. My wife had an Ibook that a cat knocked a small flower pot full of water on . More than a glass full. WE unpluged it, pulled the battery and turned it on it's side to get the water out. The next day I took the top cover off and drained the rest of the water out. Took it out in the garage, turned on the compressor an low air and blew it out carefully. put it backtogether and started it up. That Ibook lasted 5 years and was still working when I sold it three weeks ago. It was on when the water hit it.

Wow, I can't believe its lasted 5+ years. It kind of worries me that I couldn't take apart my MacBook since the screws on the back are weird and apparently you can only take it apart at the store. I'm sure the guy that helped us got rid of some of the water when he opened it up...at least I hope he did. If not I guess it should have dried by now. Thanks for sharing though.

Whether or not it lasts forever from here or not, I'm still going to take it in and have it looked at again, since it's in different shape than right after the accident. It is sort of difficult to listen to everyone's advice and decide what to do since I'm obviously not that knowledgable about my situation, but I think it's best for me to take it in and get another opinion on it in person. I can also ask my brother to come with me, since he knows computers pretty well. I haven't told him what happened yet, mostly because I'm worried he'll be angry that I was so careless, but accidents happen.

I do appreciate the replies, though. I didn't expect so many.

You are wise to get a Genius Bar opinion and carefully pick and choose what you think is best from all of our words since we are not actually there.

As to your brother ... if he is anything like my brothers, he will express concern for what happens next instead of what happened before. He will hopefully save the accusations for after the evaluation, and then have forgotten about them when the evaluation comes.

Life has bigger challenges for you two in the future ... trust me.

Hey I just managed to also spill about half of a glass of a water all over the keyboard of my Macbook Air. It made a weird sound like some mechanical part was going crazy. I was able to get it to start up but after about 1 minute of usage the graphics get messed up and there are these blue horizontal blocky lines of noise and I just turn it off. I hope mine might come back to life after it dries a bit more but I was curious whether yours is still working fine.

Hey I'm really sorry that happened to you. Well, it's hard to say if mine is okay or not. It works pretty okay, except the webcam doesn't connect and the M key on the keyboard doesn't work. I also find it heats up really easily, so I don't really use it, because I'm worried about what might happen to it if it overheats.

I took it to the Apple store to get reevaluated, and the cost to fix it was $600. The guy there said it would probably fix the problems I was having, but the laptop did get water spilled on it, so it probably never really would be the same. Also it's hard to say how water corrosion could affect the laptop on the inside in the future, and I might have other problems that cost even more to get fixed. I decided to save up for a new laptop instead, one that didn't have any water damage at all, and would be well worth my money. I think they updated the Airs a bit too since I got mine over a year and a half ago. I also notice my MacBook is kind of creaky, for lack of a better word, when I pick it up.

My advice would be to open your MacBook air, and lay it sort of screen down and keyboard down somewhere where it can dry. I mean obviously it won't lay flat, but hopefully you know what I mean. I left mine like that for...a month? I'd wait until you're sure it's completely dried out, try turning it on after it's dry, and take it to the Apple store. I found when mine was somewhat wet, my screen seemed basically busted and it had a lot of horizontal lines too, but now it's fine. If you want to get it fixed, that's your choice, it could go completely fine and your MacBook will be good to go for a long time, but it's hard to say what water corrosion can do.

I hope this helps.

Oh no 😟 yes, it sort of still works, but I don't use it. I finally saved up enough money for a new one at the beginning of November. My cost to fix it from the Apple store was $600, and even then they couldn't guarantee that it would fix the problems I was having or that I wouldn't have any problems in the future, so I thought it was a better idea to get a new one, instead of potentially ending up spending the same amount as a new laptop.

My advice is to open it, flip it upside down, and let the water drain out. Don't try to turn it on. When mine was first turned on in store later the same day I spilled water on it, the screen was totally messed up and it was having a lot of problems because there was still water in it. The estimated cost to fix it was about $1200 that day. I believe at least a month later, once all the water was gone and evaporated, I had it reevaluated and that's where I got the $600 price point. It does heat up very fast because the fan doesn't work, and the 'm' key and webcam don't work because of the damage. It's also pretty creaky and makes weird snapping noises when I move it, and sometimes if it's moved in a certain way it will turn itself on. Other than that, it works fine, but the fact that the fan seemed to have problems and it would get hot very fast scared me too much to continue to use it, since I watch a lot of videos and play games and such. This might not be what will happen to yours, but that's my experience.

I hope this helped you. Reply to this if you have any questions.

Thank you Naida for your reply! I did open it and flip it upside down and you're right, it turned on itself and now I can't turn it off :( because apparently the keypad and trackpad aren't working :( and the fan is making a lot of noise!! :( so I just closed it and leave it there :( I've made appointment with apple store and see what they can do :( you know last time I spilled some latte on it too but everything worked fine just some keys were sticky so I had to take it to apple too and they said I have to get a new keypad which cost me $200 :( but anyways, thank you so much again for your reply and advice :) have a nice day !!!

Sorry to be preachy, but ...

You learned from last time that fluids and electronics do not mix. You were lucky last time and it was revived. You may not be lucky this time.
