I just bought a new iphone 4s and I can't get it to sync to my itunes? help!

I've follwed all the online support I can find and made sure my itunes was up to date...turned on and off both my phone and my macbook and still can't get my itunes to recongnize my iphone. Any tips out there? I'm brand new to the iphone world!
