how to stop auto checking of email iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0.1

I am not sure what is going on but since upgrading my iPhone 4 recently to iOS 5.0.1 I can't stop the phone from automatically checking email.

I have configured the following settings so far:

Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Fetch New Data/Push=OFF

schedule=manually

for each account: advanced=Manual

Settings/Notifications - set mail to "Not in Notification Center"

Alert Style=none

Badge App Icon=on

View in Lock Screen=off

I have had to disable all accounts to stop it from checking. I can't take the chance of it going off during class or work.

More importantly, there are some days where I am on the college campus for 12-14 hours and I need to conserve battery power as much as possible and need to disable it from automatically checking email

Any help is greatly appreciated

I can't turn off cellular data as I need to be able to receive text message for campus energencies and announcements.

As far as the settings, I already have push set to off and fetch to manually

Also, when I am done using mail I generally close it using multitasking as mentiioned. I started doing this with my older iphone because of limited memory. Now I still do it more out of habit

Now what else can I do?
