There are several apps on the app store for this. I use Goodplayer
I bought CineXplayer a few minutes ago.
I have a Seagate GoFlex hard drive that can be accessed wirelessly from my computer and watch movies, pictures, etc. wirelessly. I can view pictures on my iPad using GoFlexAccess app (free from Seagate) wirelessly from the hard drive but .avi movies simply because iPad doesn't provide .avi codec.
I don't think CineXplayer allow me to watch .avi movies wirelessly from the GoFlex hard drive directly. You have to download them to iPad using CineXplayer first to watch, correct? Is there a way to watch .avi movies directly from the hard drive without downloading to the iPad first?
I've not tried streaming it from a Seagate GoFlex. Maybe someone else can help.

Don't know if this app will do what you are trying to do, but I watch AVI Movies on my iPad2 using the FlexPlayer App.
It works well for AVI files loaded on the iPad.
