MacBook, iPhone, and iPad integration

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8, an iPhone 1 running iOS 3.1.3, and an iPad running 4.3.5.

The carrier for the iPhone is T-Mobile.

I'd like to upgrade the iPad to iOS 5. Can I do that if the Mac stays on Snow Leopard? Will the iPhone work? What function am I giving up?

If you are considering using iCloud to have all your devices and mac synced, then you'll have to upgrade the mac to Lion and deviced to iOS 5. I don't believe the iPhone 1 can be upgraded to 5.
