MP4 file in iPad2

I read someplace that iPad2 will play .mp4 files, so I e-mailed a file to myself, opened it in "Mail' clicked the file to download...and it seemed to download. However, I cannot find the file in Music, Videos, Photos or any place like that. I have read since that iPad2 will only plaay mp4 files in iTunes format.True? Other questions:

1. Where did the downloaded file (25 mb) go? I want to delete it....and how do I do that?

2. Had I had the VLC Media player app installed, would IT have played it? Or must it be converted by some iTumes app...and which app is that?

3. My grandson a couple of thousand miles away set up my iPad2 on his laptop, so I don't have access to his iTunes, nor do I have a PC with iTunes installed. I have only had the iPad for only a month.

Thanks

There is no iTunes format, but the file must be in an iPad compatible format. Being an MP4 file alone does not mean it is an iPad compatible format.

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format.

A video file attached to an email remains with the email. A photo attachment can be saved to the Camera Roll and a PDF attachment can be saved and opened with the iBooks app, but you can't save a video file outside of the received email.

If the video is not in an iPad compatible format and is supported for viewing with the VLC Media Player, you will have an "open with" option for such an email attachment to be opened/viewed with an available 3rd party app.
