I want to sell my macbook pro with lion. How do I prepare it for sale?

You will not be able to sell it with Lion as the version you have is linked to YOUR Apple ID...

Boot from the original OS installer disk and do an Erase & Install.

When the Mac reboots into Mac Setup Assistant you quit and shut it down.

When the New Owner Boots it up it's a brand new Mac... just like when you got it.

Selling with Lion is not selling it like you bought it, assuming you bough it new.

Wipe the drive with Disk Utility and then install the original OS. Let the new owner buy their own copy of Lion.

Until the OP sells his Mac, he owns it, therefore as he can install a copy of Lion purchased from the App Store on as many Macs he Owns he can sell it with Lion.

Here is an excerpt of the SLA; the Lion license (purchased from MAS) is NOT transferable. The SLA is quite clear:

B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or on Apple-branded physical media, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to athird party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware beforedoing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating systemsoftware that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) andpermanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that:(i) the transfer must include all of the Original Apple OS, including all its component parts,printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, fullor partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the partyreceiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of theOriginal Apple OS license.

You're right, apologies, and what a pain to deal with when selling an older but upgraded Mac, transfer would make more sense (especially as a replacement Mac will include a copy of the current OS)

I guess you could always give the buyer your AppleID and password so they can reinstall if they need to.

I know it is confusing and there will no doubt be a lot of angry buyers of used Macs when they find out that the OS on their Mac is worthless since it's tied not only to the machine ID, but also the Apple ID of the previous owner.......

I wish Apple would put a disclaimer everywhere so current owners are aware of the rules.

You do not need to deactivate them; wiping the drive is fine. Just make sure all your applications work with Lion (I assume they will if you've used them on the current machine).

After you wipe and reinstall Snow Leopard, make sure to include the SL disk for the buyer.

That's not quite right, many Adobe applications require deactivating prior to reinstalling them on a new machine, the others mentioned do not but CS4 does.

ahh, no idea - I refuse to do anything Adobe - I was going by the Apple applications......

Talk to it nicely. Tell it that it wasn't its fault. It's just you, not something it did. Emphasize that you'll both be happier if you move on.

Can you give me another way to sell your Mac (that did not ship with Lion) with a fully functioning Lion installation already on it as Csound1 thinks should be possible. Note that if you have to tell someone it is sarcasm, it loses all entertainment value.
