Can I put DDR3 memory in a 2008 Mac Pro 3.1

I have a 2008 Mac Pro 3.1, with dual, quad-core Intel Xeons, and 4GB (4X1GB) of DDR2 800mhz ram installed. I would like to upgrade to DDR3 RAM. Is it possible to simply replace the risers with ones that support DDR3 memory, or would I need to replace the entire motherboard for this upgrade? I'm running 10.7.2.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

I don't think you should put ram in your machine that is not specified for your machine. Besides even if you could, the memory buss clock speed isn't going to change.

If you want to "upgrade" your memory and overall perfomance of your system then upgrade by adding more of it. Here's OWC's page which gives you choices of upgrade paths you can take with the proper memory designed for your system.
