Will the option of getting a .Mac email address ever come back? If not, is there an option to purchase an existing .Mac email account from someone?

    No and No.

.Mac was absorbed into iCloud, but you can still use a .Mac email address.

    Rysz,

I know that we can still use the .me and .mac email addresses, but do you know if they'll go away when MobileMe goes away in June of this year?

The only way to migrate to iCloud is to upgrade to Lion or have an iOS 5 device.  I have not yet upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion (I first need to find replacements for my PPC software/scanner drivers), nor do I have iOS device that can be upgraded to iOS 5.

As far as I know, Apple has no plans now to eliminate these addresses or force averyone to use a .iCloud address. The June cut-off date is for accessing the MobileMe services.

If past is any indicator, Apple did not require a change fom .Mac to .Me addresses when that switch over occurred.

Apple have stated quite clearly that the @me.com address will continue for existing and new users, and @mac.com addresses will continue for those who already have them. There is no such thing as an @icloud.com address.

    Thanks Rysz and Roger.

I wonder if I'll be able to get to my mail from a web browser after the cutoff.  I use Mail.app to read my mail at home, but when I'm away, I use www.me.com.

I hadn't seen that but I guess I'm not surprised. Too bad. I'd love to get one (and I'm sure there are millions of others who feel the same way).

iCloud mail is available on the website at https://www.icloud.com . It does not have the facility, which was introduced to MobileMe a couple of years back, to access POP mail from other services.

So which one should I choose???  (if I want to get rid of all this confusion and just have one address)

       .mac or .me???

If you had a DotMac account running before the change to MobileMe you have both @mac.com and @me.com addresses which deliver into the same inbox: you can use either as it suits you.

If you started your account after MobileMe was introduced you have only @me.com and @mac.com is not available to you.

Addresses you have now will continue to work after June as long as you migrate to iCloud.

I wish I'd had a DotMac address. I'd love to have one.
