Q: Address Labels

I am searching for help on how to print address labels. Before upgrading to the almighty Lion on my Mac Mini and losing the ability to use AppleWorks, I had AppleWorks set up with my Christmas address list allowing me to print address labels for all of my Christmas cards using Avery labels. Now thanks to the Almighty Lion, I am unable to use AppleWorks for this purpose.  I am searching for assistance in how to print my address labels. Do I have to purchase new software such as The Print Shop? Or is there a way to continue to do it in OS 10.7? I might add that I also have Office for Mac 2011 on my laptop still running 10.6 but I cannot see how to import my old AppleWorks address labels template into Word.  Although I once thought it would be heresy to say this, I am far less than thrilled with Lion.

I assume your labels were an Appleworks Database. I'm afraid I have to tell you that nothing will open an AppleWorks database. The only way to retrieve your data is to be able to open the file in AppleWorks - on an older computer, or one someone else has - and either export the file as an ASCII file (which will export the data but not the labels layout) or make a PDF from the Print dialog - which would retain the printable layout but not be editable.

The exported data can be opened in other programs such as Bento or FileMaker Pro. I don't know about Bento: FileMaker Pro can print Avery labels (new layout - select labels).

There are bound to be other programs able to print labels though you may have to enter the data from scratch.

Thanks very much. I shall therefore stop wasting further time attempting to achieve the impossible. Happy New Year!

"I might add that I also have Office for Mac 2011 on my laptop still running 10.6 but I cannot see how to import my old AppleWorks address labels template into Word. "

Why not Export them from AppleWorks? You won't be able to export the Templates, but you will be able to export the data.

AppleWorks 6 will run under 10.6, providing you have Rosetta installed. If you have AppleWorks still installed on any machine, just copy the AppleWorks folder (and contents) from the Applications folder of the machine it's on and put it into the Applications folder of the laptop.

Using Appleworks on a machine running 10.6, I printed the mailing labels in list layout with five columns (first name, last name, address, city, zip) to a .pdf file.  I opened the .pdf file and Numbers on my 10.7 machine; dragged (highlighted) and copied the cells in the pdf file, then pasted them into a blank Numbers worksheet.  The data mapped cell by cell.  I added the appropriate column headings and Exported from Numbers to a .csv file using Western (Mac OS Roman) text encoding.  Address book then imported the csv file with no problems.

It sounds messy, but I found it easier than exporting to a .txt (or .tsv) file for the transfer.  Using the .pdf as the intermediate file let me ensure that I copied only the data I wanted, in the layout that mapped to the Numbers spreadsheet.  Going directly from the .pdf file to the latest versions of Numbers and Address Book also increased the probability that everything would work smoothly.

Address book provides the option of printing envelops or mailing labels and gives you the flexibility of using groups.

    @LittleSkipper:

Excellent suggestion. Certainly simplifies the process in some cases.

Second the suggestion to just use Address Book, which actually works very well. All of the address data was there in any case, or was for me at least, and it's a trivial matter to gather them into various groupings for different kinds of mailings, different styles of labels, whatever ...

I still do the old style too, as I'm holding onto SL on this iMac for some time to come ..... or at least through June, when MM goes away and I have to turn to 'the cloud' like the good little sheep that I am supposed to be, I suppose. I may just partition this drive or put a Snow Leopard OS including AW out on some other HD, do something to maintain the capability as I have such a large number of AW files of all sorts built up over the years, especially DB's, that I still use fairly routinely

Thank you Michael. I did end up using Address Book and it indeed works perfectly I have now set up a separate grouping for my Christmas list.

May I also ask you what is the meaning of MM when you say it will go away in June?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Sure ... MobileMe is scheduled to be killed off, permanently, as of 30June (I believe that's the correct date). Everything that you're now doing with it will have to be transferred to iCloud or other chosen spots before that time, obviously.

It's a change that I don't welcome and am not looking forward to. More discussion about this, lots of it, in the MobileMe forums.
