Why does Apple charge so much for repair, if they only replace your iPod with another one? Can't they just repair the screen?

Sometimes it is more cost-effective to replace an item than repair when the parts and labor costs are considered.
I guess that just Apple deceided that the flat-rate replacement was best overall. It is up to Apple how they want to handle repairs. There are third-party places that will repair your iPod.
