IMac G5 Blue Screen Fault

Hi,


I have a IMac G5 and when I turn the IMac on the loads the apple logo then it goes on to a blank ligh blue sceen and does not load anyting else.


Does any one know a solution. I think it is a logic board fault.

Try a safe boot.

Shutdown your machine. Hold down the shift key. Poweron. Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive

is being checked.

Could be a corrupt disk. Run Disk Utility.



I suspect disk corruptions.

To verify & repair you file system on the startup drive, you will need to run disk utility from you installation DVD.


This article will tell you how to get to disk utility. Once in a disk utility, you can go and attempt to recover the disk.

How to run disk utility from your startup DVD.

  1. Insert your startup DVD into your reader. Power down your machine. Hold down to the c key. Power on your machine. This will bootup your startup DVD.
  2. This will bring you to a panel asking you for your language. Pick your language.

  4. You you come to the Install Mac OS panel. Do not install.
  5. Click on Utilities menu item. This will give you a pulldown list of utilities. User uploaded file
  6. Click on the disk utility.
  7. You are now in disk utility. Pick your disk. Click on repair it should be on the lower right of the panel. User uploaded file
  8. Once the repair completes successfully, you should update your permissions.

Verify a disk

As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.

I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Start up disk utility. On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.
Click on your startup disk.
Click on the First Aid Tab.
Click on verify.


Hopefully your disk will verify. If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

Hi,


I have managed to get the operating system that caused the blue screen fault. I took it to the apple shop and they reinstalled it. Now the screen is going fuzzy with lines and the man in the apple shop said it was the graphics card but where would you find that on a imac G5 and how would get one because apple have stopped selling them.

That would depend on which model/generation G5 iMac you have.

See if you display is fine in safemode. poweroff. hold down the shift key. poweron.


If so...


Running in Safe mode leaves out some video drivers. Which results in machine not using advanced video hardware. You can run in normal mode but using the safe mode video drivers.For more details see:

I'd look at what extra is added to a normal boot over safe boot.


Did you reformat your harddrive. Maybe you have a corrupt hd. Could you try running off an external hd?

You need to verify that you have an ATI video hardware. It will appear as ATY.

Meanwhile,


You may want to post machine info.

blue apple > about this mac > more info button. Click on the hardware line. It has a little triangle in front of the work hardware.


Leave out the serial number.


Example:

Machine Name: iMac

Machine Model: PowerMac4,1

CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (33.11)

Number Of CPUs: 1

CPU Speed: 600 MHz

L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB

Memory: 768 MB

Bus Speed: 100 MHz

Boot ROM Version: 4.1.9f1

To try:

1) Make a backup of your files. You may want to backup your complete system.


2) Create a new folder. I made /System/Library/ExtensionsDisabled


3) move all the files starting with ATI in folder /System/Library/Extensions to the new folder /System/Library/ExtensionsDisabled


a) goto the Finder then type

shift + command + g

b) type in

/System/Library/Extensions

c) press return

d) This will list the files in the Extensions folder

e) click on the first ATI file

f) hold down the shift key

g) click on the last ATI file

h) drag these files to the new folder

4) do a normal boot.


Notice the current data on these files & folders.
