I have a similar problem.

Pandora stopped working on my Touch (Pandora can not connect…). A message window gives the choices to Try Again or Cancel. Try again leads to an endless loop thru the error message and cancel leads to a dead end screen.

So I deleted Pandora to delete me settings.

When I try to reinstall Pandora I am told is needs an newer iOS. When I try to install an iOS iTunes 10 tells me 2.2.1 is the latest OS for my Touch.

Seems my Touch has been obsolted by Apple.

Is my only choice to buy a new Touch?

I had the exact same problem with my 32GB iPod Touch 3rd Gen - all of a sudden Pandora would just spin and not load. I was running the most current ios and had updated the app through 'Updates" in Itunes. I tried to delete and re-install the app, but was getting an error in iTunes that it couldn't install because my touch was not running the latest ios???

How I solved it: I navigated to the App Store on my iPod Touch and searched for Pandora. The Ipod version was listed. I clicked to download and it started to install and then received an error message saying that Itunes could not install the latest version of Pandora, did I want to install the most compatible version? Clicked yes, fished installing with no problem and app opened and worked fine.

Hope this works for you.

That is all covered by the following which was not available in 2012 when this discussion was started:

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
