How do I back up all my photos to an external hard drive? I am currently using iPhoto '09 (version 8.1.2). The hard drive is a Seagate GoFlex which is formatted for both Mac & PC. The computer I'm using is a 13" MacBook Pro..

If you want to use a drive that is not formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) you can only backup your photos -to backup the iPhoto library you must have a volume with the above format
To backup your photos select them and export (file menu ==> export) to a folder on the external drive
To backup your library drag it intact as a single entity to a prooerly formated external drive or use a good backup program or clone program- I use Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner

Thank you Larry for you support. My next question is how do I combine or do I keep photos separate from an older version of iPhoto to the external hard drive? My older photos are on a 17" MacBook Pro (version 10.5.8) using iPhoto 6 (version 6.0.6). I am new at this please forgive me if these are redundant qestions.

You ned to keep them separate as the older iPhoto won't understand the newer iPhoto's library.
Put them in different folders.
