iphone 4 iOS 5 pics black in iPhoto but ok in Preview

Several of my recent photo's show up pure black in iphoto after import. The pics look fine in thumbnails of import window, but after import, they are black.

Pictures look fine on iphone.

I have imported the same exact pictures via Preview and they look great. Saved them in a folder and looked at the resulting high resolution picture without issue.

I did the normal stuff to repair iphoto database, repair permissions, etc.

I created a new iphoto database and imported...same issue.

I have been through many of the previous discussions, but none are exactly matching my description of being able to import via Preview ok and into a new library without issue.

Using iphone 4 with ios 5.0.1, mac mini with lion 10.7.2.

Thanks,

Phil

Sorry, I should have proof read the description better.

Preview import works great on all pictures. Certain pictures do not import correctly into iphoto libraries(default and newly created). I don't delete pics from the camera, so I can duplicate this at will. Again, it is only certain pictures, but I don't know what is unique about the ones that import black.

Well, it seems that the problem has gone away.

I went back to my original default library, and importing the problematic pictures is now working.

I did not reboot. I had created a new iphoto library, duplicated the problem with the new library and posted it. However, now that I have gone back to the original default library(very large), the problem has gone away. I went back to the 'test library 2' and it imports correctly the problematic pictures.

I had turned my iphone off twice today(dr appt), so did some state change on the iphone? Not sure.

Anyhow, it is closed. I recommend switching libraries to a test library and then back again, and reset iphone a few times if this happens to you!

Ok, I believe the problem had something to do with pictures in portrait mode, not landscape. I just reimported all of my last 277 pictures. Every picture comes up with prompt that it found a duplicate. I am saying 'no' to import if both pics are the same, but if the existing is a black picture, I am importing the picture again. ALL of the problem pics where taken in portrait form. ALL of the landscape and movies are fine.

Attached an example of a portrait picture that I was having problems with. As you can see, the system detects a duplicate, but the existing is showing up as all black? At this prompt, I go ahead and import the duplicate and it is showing up fine now. Previously, I had done this many many times, and the picture always imported black.

Here is example of a picture that was fine, so I don't import the duplicate:

one final thought, I don't believe this was a problem with the iphone because I was able to import correctly with Preview at the same time that iPhoto was not. Only after changing to a newly created iphoto library, and duplicating problem, and then going back to my original iphone library, did the problem go away. I am 99% certain I had restarted iphoto prior to changing libraries.

Terence, I don't believe this has anything to do with a specific library. I created a brand new library, and I can duplicate importing portrait pictures that are black on both existing and new libraries...and from iphone imports and cd imports.

I have tried rebuilding permissions.

This is a bug in iphoto.

That said, I will try it, but I don't have any expectations of fixing it this way.

I guess Terence is smarter then me...i checked every box in the rebuild box that comes up after starting iphoto with command-option held. This includes rebuilding from auto backup, permissions, all thumbnails, etc....took about 5 hours, as I have 28k pictures..........

The first time I reimported, iphoto hung...left it all night..force quit...restarted....

I finally successfully reimported and the portrait is importing correctly..

Rebuilt my iPhoto library and it is still importing 'modified' (iPhone 4S 5.0.1) photos as black images. The originals are fine, but since it displays the modified versions, they show up as black within iPhoto '11.

Oddly they are mostly the landscape photos - portrait photos seem to import without an issue.

As Phil Ruff says, this has to be an iOS5 + iPhoto '11 bug.

I had this problem too. None of the solutions in this thread and others (rebuilding the DB, changing permissions etc) worked. I checked another computer where the photos imported fine. I rebooted the affected computer, removed the black photos and reimported. That reboot fixed the problem here!! I'm thinking we had not restarted the computer since the last iPhoto update, which might have caused our issue? Anyway just wanted to mention this as a thing to try...
