why is my ipod making a grinding noise

If the hard drive on a Classic iPod is making a grinding noise, the hard drive is going (or has gone) bad, and it is tiume to buy a new one. You said you can't restore it, so I assume you have already tried to connect it to iTunes and restore it (if you have not, try that... although it is probably only a matter of time until it dies permanently).
