create a folder /here/ (in this folder) command?

I have Finder set to open a double clicked folder in a new window and I have looked pretty close at these settings AFAIK. Also, column view just does not give me enough space to maneuver in so I never use it. With new folder getting created on a doulble-click it still requires me to doubleclick on where I want the new folder, go to the new folder, hit the new folder icon, /find/ the new folder, re-name it - and then go find it /again/ when it jumps up in the list to get to alphabetical order for the new name.

You follow? I mean, at first I wanted to ask if there was a way to turn off the alphabetical sorting for newly added files (like give me a minute or so before you move it on me)...

Anyway, does anyone know if there is a script available that will let me click on the folder I want a new folder in and then NAME IT and have it put it there? This would simplify my life in a profound way.

If it is OK I am hoping someone will give me a widget that will do this or that there is one out there somewhere. I hate having to then sort through my other data in non-alphabetical order (I even hate having folders show up alphabetically with the files and I d/l some hack that was supposed to fix this but it didn't seem to do it reliably for some reason).

Anyway, very nice suggestion it is just that this adds a click to sort by date and then i have to click to re-sort by name so i can find things again.

This is a great suggestion and I have tried column view at the urging of a number of folks but I never find it has the right ergonomics for me and I miss not having the list view with Details which I rely upon. I also don't mind having other Finder windows open and on top of others - - even though I would like to find a good way to clean this up a little as they do seem to be all over the place a little too much. Is there a widget or tool that /organizes/ multiple Finder windows?! Is this in some native mac software that are actionable in the Settings...?

Anyway, doesn't this method still require me to find the new folder which is at the bottom of the "new column" and then require that I rename it and then it will jump to a new location and then I still have to find it when I drag and drop the data?

I mean - objectively speaking wouldn't it be nice to have a "create new folder right here in this folder named 'X'" utility or a "move these files to a new folder named 'X' located in this folder as a sub-folder" or even a "...located in this /new/ folder which is a subfolder of this folder > navigate to parent folder"...?

Hi. I think you are saying that if I navigate to the folder that I want to create a new folder in and if I open this folder and if I right click on an open space then i get this option, is that right?

if so, this is helpful but it is not really solving the problem I am trying to describe.

in this scenario i still have to first /open/ the folder that i need the new folder in, then i have to try and get in there and find a blank space (supposedly there was some way to force a blank space or clicking to the right of the list gave a blank space but in my Finder view I have to literally find a blank area at the bottom to get this not to drop into /another/ folder /within/ the folder that I want) but anyway - after doing all this I then have to /rename/ the folder so it is not named untitled and /then/ it disappears up into the folder so that it "helpfully" organizes itself alphabetically.

this is a cluster of manual operations i was hoping to avoid.

why can't i just click on the folder i need a new folder in and /also/ name it at the same time. it is a major pita to go running around in a list of 100 items to find a new folder that has just gotten renamed. which is not to mention it is a pita to have to /open/ it, navigate /to/ it etc, etc.

X's suggestion to keep the view sorted by Date is helpful but I am jumping around folder to folder and finder window to finder window and this is a major league pain.

as a workaround I normally just put a folder on the desktop and then move all the items that need moving to it while it is on the desktop and then i drag /that/ folder over the folder where i want it and just drop it in. this is fine but it is still a workaround do you see?

Hi. I appreciate the help here. I noticed the first couple of characters selects the respective name function. I'm sort of curious to know if I can turn this off if I want but i definitely see how it could be helpful.

The problem I am having is that this is still another step in a very involved process. Even the CMD+SHIFT+N is sort of a handful in terms of getting all three fingers to plunk down here (two hands!) when I just am trying to create a new folder. I mean, these are all workarounds that involve clicks and multiple keyboard selections, no?

The point about creating a folder where I want it with one or two clicks is because I need it there and I want to get it there without five or six steps. A SCRIPT for this would be fantastic. I guess I can search for "Applescript" and "New Folder Creation" to try and find this and then implement it in Applescript?

Anyway, the fact is that I have multiple finder windows open at all times and it would be much, much, much simpler to simplify the new folder creation for me if this is at all possible. I do this hundreds of times a day and 9 times out of ten the new folder will already be accessible on my desktop in another finder window. Whether I would like to be able to organize these Finder windows a little better is another story but I'd really love to solve the new folder issue with something a little more straightforward.

For my usage this is a major pain and one of the more glaring weaknesses of Finder and the OS in terms of functionality.

re-reading this thread and i am glad there are two folks that get how badly this is needed. please post back if you find a solution.

it is one of a number of rather repetitive tasks that make me feel like my OS is not optimized.
