WDT timeout, unsolvable?

Hello,

A few months ago, my iPhone 3GS started rebooting every 5-10 minutes, only when the mobile network was activated.

I did a hard reset, and everything was fine again.

But now, there're problems again... Now, the iPhone resets 3-5 times a day, but also when airplane mode is activated.

When you look at the crashlogs, it's always because a "WDT timeout". There's one other topic about this subject (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3500622?start=0&tstart=0), I tried every possible solution, but it didn't help.

I didn't try a hard reset (yet), because I don't think it's convenient to do this every few months or so.

My questions are:

1- What's the WDT-process?

2- Anybody has a solution for

(the Apple helpdesk didn't seem keen to help me)

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,

Joris

The WDT monitors apps, and kills them if they don't respond within a preset timeout (all apps are supposed to "check in" with iOS frequently*). If it's a built in app that doesn't respond you will get a kernel panic (sort of like a Windows Blue Screen of Death). As to WHY a built in app isn't responding, it's as much a mystery to me as it is to you. As a start restore the device with iTunes and set up as New. Add only email accounts and test. If it doesn't crash after a while add back other apps. If it crashes as New you've got a hardware problem.

Is it a hardware bug (new battery, new display, ...) or is it a software bug?

I have currently the following suspects:

- Battery (replacement part from Apple in use)

- Display (replacement part from Apple in use)

- Flash storage (free disk space very low (< 1 GB left))

- iOS

The ResetCounter-Log created after reboot of the iDevice has "bug_type" = 115).

What do you think?

MobileHero,

I have exactly the same symptoms on my iPhone 5, have done for a long time, can't find cause or solution (tried DFU and normal restore, several updates etc). Interestingly enough I had the issue 1st where the phone would freeze for a few mins and then come back as if noting was wrong (I assumed a faulty app running in background) but I just got used to it as it was not often and did not reboot, however these days it either comes back for a split second then reboots or reboots straight away (I think apple may have changed timeout behavior to restart SpringBoard or the OS if there is inactivity where as before it was more tolerant).

Some days it only happens once or twice, other days it happens 10-20 times. Apple Store diagnostics didn't help. Have also replaced screen and battery after the issue and has not changed it at all. It definitely happens more often if I am updating apps, in fact I can be sure that it will happen most of the time when updating apps. Phone is close to full (64GB with 2GB left) and I fear that it is a hardware issue with the flash storage.

Did you open another thread on this?

Thanks!

Hi,

after trying and checking several things for weeks I´m now pretty sure it´s the flash storage. The error will only appear if the remaining storage is shrinking. Not sure at how much GB storage left it started, but with about 2 GB or less remaining the bug shows it´s "bad side": Screen freeze, Reboot, taking a few minutes. I managed to clear some GB - now about 5 GB free space left - and the bug "get´s better": When freezing the screen only turns black and comes back to lock screen a few moments later.

I´m currently focussing on trying to figure out how much GB left is the border line. The bug can be provoked at nearly 100% by simply running app store updates.

For me it seems - again - like a flash storage bug. And because it never has been changed this hardware error has been delivered already by factory. Interesting point in matters of customer rights...
