"iChat can't communicate with the jabber account, disconnected unexpectedly"

We are running a Snow Leopard server here in the office, but no one can connect to iChat with their given jabber id. I have tried manually putting the settings in, I have tried letting the computer configure them itself [through system preferences -> accounts -> login options and choosing the networked server], and I have gone through the manuals. I have gone into the server itself and made sure everything is on and functioning, but it just won't connect. I keep getting the same message. I'm guessing there's some small setting that I don't have set right, I'm just not sure what it is and don't even know where to start looking.

"iChat can't communicate with the Jabber account "gretchenmiller@marquardtplus.private". Disconnected unexpectedly"

I've looked through the community and none of the given directions have helped. I posted on the iChat section, but they suggested I post here. Can anyone out there help me out? We're a small design studio, so we don't have an IT person to do this for me.

Thanks,

Gretchen

Hi gretchenmp, if you go into server admin, click on iChat, then the logs tab, can you copy and paste what is in the logs here? also reading through them might give you an indication of what is happeneing. As an example, in my log I see things like:

Jan 5 08:09:52 aphrodite jabberd/c2s[3106]: [23] SASL authentication succeeded: mechanism=DIGEST-MD5; authzid=auser@my.server.net, TLS negotiated

which is showing auser@my.server.net just logged on using TLS.

You can also use "Console" which is found in the system utilities, to check for underlying issues. Without knowing specifics of your system, often on our OSX 10.6 servers if DNS is not functioning properly, a whole host of services will mis-behave.

Do you have services that are working on this server? Are you familiar with DNS on OSX 10.6? You can check if DNS is functioning by submitting the following command in "Terminal" (found in utilities folder):

***********************************************************

myserver:~ root# changeip -checkhostname

Primary address = 172.16.1.1

Current HostName = my.server.net

DNS HostName = my.server.net

The names match. There is nothing to change.

dirserv:success = "success"

aphrodite:~ root#

***********************************************************

If everything is good here, then we know DNS is functioning properly. I hope this helps to get you started in determining what the problem is. Please post you success or if you need additional help, the logs.

Here's a chunk of what's in the log [it's refusing to let me copy and paste, so I'm just doing a screen grab].

User uploaded file

As for checking the dns in the terminal, I keep getting "command not found" when I try that [on my computer side]. I had done that a few days ago as well and got the same problem. If I try it on the server, I just get "serveradmin must be run as root." I'm getting so frustrated with this dang thing refusing to do anything simple I ask it to do. Sigh.

If any of that helped, or if you have something more specific to get the dns check to work, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks,

Gretchen

Hi gretchen,

based on the screen shot it does look like you may have some DNS issues (i see reference of .local).

FYI to copy and paste, you can use click into the log, click and drag to highlight and copy lines you want, or go to edit at the top, select all, then copy, or use the standard keyboard shortcuts for select all (cmd a), copy(cmd c).

in order to run the command changeip -checkhostname, you need to launch terminal on the server (or ssh into the server from a remote machine), issue the command :

:su -root

which will then as you for a password (if you did not set one, then it is the same as your administrator password), and then issue the command changeip -checkhostname.

After performing that, copy and paste the output here so we can take a look.

Jan 6, 2012 9:45 AM in response to cpguru21

For the copying and pasting, I know how to do that, it's just not doing it. I hit cmd-c, I did it by right-clicking and using the menu, it's copying all right, but when I go into the main computer, not the server window, it's not recognizing that I copied anything new. Hence the screengrabs.

But, moving on. I got the hostname check to work, thank you. Here is a screen grab [again, it's not copying]:

User uploaded file

As you can see, I don't seem to have a dns problem. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Gretchen

Hi Gretchen!

I didnt meand to insult your intelligence. I dont know you personally so it is hard to gather your competence level from this discussion. I am guessing you are using ARD (apple remote desktop) to connect to the server in which case there is an extra step needed to copy and paste to your local client. You could also open text editor, highlight the text, and drag to an open, blank, text edit document.

It does indeed look as if DNS is configured properly. DNS is the place to start because all other services depend on it.

what i saw was this:

authenticated as conference.mraquardtplus-server.local

which was why I thought DNS may be an issue.

Is conference one of the users you are trying to connect as? We may need someone with more experiance than me to help trouble shoot.

if you can get the entire log in a "copy and paste" or "click and drag" from the server window to your system, or edit this discussion from the server, it would be easier to look at the logs.

Jan 6, 2012 12:09 PM in response to cpguru21

No, I know, you always have to assume the other person knows nothing 😀 Okay, through some finagling, I managed to save the log to the server, copy it to my computer from there, and now can copy and paste in here. This is all that was in there at this point:

The only users I've tried to log on so far are gretchenmiller@marquardtplus.private [myself] and tommarquardt@marquardtplus.private, both got the same issue.

If there's anything else I can provide, I will happily do so.

Thanks,

Gretchen

Gretchen,

I sent a message out to one of the more knowlegable guru's on iChat to see if he would be so kind as to come in here and comment.

I am more of a do-er, not the best explainer. I can fix things but not great at explaining to others how to fix. I would imagine he may need more info from you, and I will monitor so I can try to help others when hes not around.

Good Luck!

Gretchen,

just another note/question;

Did you set up an account within the iChat client itself? I see you tried to set up in system preferences above. In the logs, I do not see an attempt to log in to the server. There has to be an account set up within iChat cleint itself.

If that is all set, perhaps the issue is on the firewall? Is the firewall enabled on the server? If this is an internal server as it looks like it is, can you try to temporarily disable the firewall and see if you can connect? what do the logs say after the firewall is disabled?

HTH.

Jan 6, 2012 3:21 PM in response to cpguru21

Hi,

I got the email.

However Gretchen had been to the regular iChat Area and I had sent her here 🙂

In this area I would normally recommend any post by Tim Harris.

I know form following some threads that I have asked to be moved (I Stay subscribed that way) that Tim normally starts with DNS issues as one of the most common causes for things not being right.

(I must admit to not checking if he is still posting)

This is not only the Server's access to the Internet but from there to the LAN as well.

I know from the Client end that it can really help if the System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab actually lists (Manually entered) the DNS servers

(I would even go as far as to list some Public ones)

Gretchen's Original Post in iChat Seems to be the same post as here.

I would double check these are accessible.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.6/en/im5945b424.html (ports iChat Server needs to Allow - or the server for iChat server)

Some version of the Mac (client ) firewall can Block UDP connections but I don't think we have an OS that Old and also the Jabber Login from the Client end is on TCP anyway.

From other threads I have tried to follow it seems that the type of Access to whatever list is held for the iChat Server, iCal or any other service on the server can be important. ( I am right over the edge of my knowledge here but Directory Access or similar ?)

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Now I have posted I will stay subscribed for a while.

That totally worked for me! I am now signed in! Sadly, it hasn't seemed to work for my other users. I was just trying to get Tom on [user tommarquardt], and I'm getting the same message I got before.

Here is the log from recently, maybe you can see why I can't get Tom logged on. The .131 IP is Tom's computer.

Le sigh. Thank you both for all your help so far.

HI,

It was easier to read in the email alert about the new post.

This line:-

Jan 6 17:36:19 marquardtplus jabberd/c2s[98309]: [9] [::ffff:192.168.1.131, port=60694] error: XML parse error (not well-formed (invalid token))

(It is all one line)

Is this about a Password ? (It may be something "simple" like a space in a name rather than password.)

Are they (either name or password) case sensitive in iChat Server.

The other thing I can see is that the port is "Odd"

By Default the client Login will be on port 5222 if not using SLL and port 5223 if you are.

The User on 131 seems to be bouncing around several ports and your own Login also used Non iChat ports.

(or is this Log internal Server stuff about iChat server checking authorisation ?)

Okay, after a lot of futzing, I managed to get others working! Woo! The server it was joining [in accounts in preferences] was a weird one and everything seems to be on now. So yeah.

Thank you guys for all your help! Hopefully within the next couple business days I can successfully get everyone else set up. It's ridiculous all the things I have to futz with, though, considering it's supposed to coordinate all this stuff itself, as I understand it... Anyway.

Thank you again!

Gretchen
