I've seen other posts for this but none of them actually answer my question. I want to be able to print from my iPad to a non Airprint printer. I don't want it to go through my iMac, I want it to print directly to the printer. Is there a software anyone has tried that does this? Again, NOT through my iMac. I want to print directly to the printer when my iMac is off.

You can't. You need to have an airprint printer to do so.
You can only do that if the non-airprint printer has an app to allow printing. Check the app store.
Well, not totally true. I have heard tell of a utility that will turn your computer into a print server and serve up the printer to the iPad/iDevice, whatever. Here are a few links:

PLEASE NOTE: I don't know whether or not it works. I'm trying out the PC one, and if I can't get it to work I'll try the Mac one. But it's an option, and I don't see any harm to it.
