Browser needed for 10.4.11

Is there another reliable browser in addition to Safari for Mac OS X 10.4.11? Firefox is discontinuing their service.

There are lots of browsers that work on 10.4.11:

TenFourFox (now at version 9 to coincide with Firefox 9):

Camino: http://caminobrowser.org/

iCab 4.8: http://icab.de/dl.php

Shiira (web site gone as of December 2011): http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15032/shiira

These are the best ones out there right now.

TenFourfox is popular but there's this note from their page, "Please note: TenFourFox no longer supports browser plugins(readwhy). If you require using Flash or other plugins, do not use TenFourFox." Since many, many sites have Flash you're really cutting off a major feature of the web these days (as much as Flash is disliked in some circles). Personally I also use a number of Firefox plugins on a daily basis. There is supposed to be a way to reverse the disabling feature in TFF but I am not sure the plugins would guarantee to work. Although Firefox support is being discontinued it still seems to work for me. For that matter support for my G4 hardware and my Tiger software is being discontinued left, right, and center by Apple and everybody else. Nevertheless, I still get by perfectly well with Safari 3.0.4, Firefox 3.6.25, iTunes 7.5 and I just sit back and relax and don't worry about trying to keep up. So far I haven't really noticed any issues in using the web. Maybe in a year, but probably by that time Tiger and my G4 will be so far behind I'll be looking at a new used computer running Snow Leopard.

As Michael Wasley noted, enabling plug-ins is very easy if you follow the exact steps here:

http://lowendmac.com/ed/royal/11sr/tenfourfox-flash-and-ppc.html

"In the address bar type 'about:config' and press enter. Look for 'tenfourfox.plugins.enabled' and set it to 'true' this will enable Flash. The developers advise against this as it may cause instability issue, but if you need Flash then you have no option. I haven't had any problems so far and Flash content like YouTube seems to run faster than it did in Safari 5."

I have been using TFF for quite awhile on Tiger PPC. I am up to version 9. I also rely on my Firefox plugins, can't be without them so I got this complete fix to allow plugins on TFF above version 5 from a note on Mac Update.

"To reenable plugins in TenFourFox 7.0 go to the address field and type about:config. Press return and click on the "I'll be careful, I promise" button.

In the filter input type "tenfourfox".

You now see TenFourFox related preferences and can set new values by Double clicking each preference.

To reenable set "tenfourfox.plugins.enabled" to true and "tenfourfox.layout.hideplugins" to false.

If you want the java plugin activated set "tenfourfox.layout.hide_java_plugin" to false. Close the window or go to a web site to verify.

Verified with Flash 10.1. I assume it will work with most other plugins as well."

I now have my original 10 FF plugins fully functional in TFF 9, seems to work with every new TFF version. As an extra browser I am also using the free OmniWeb 5.11.1 which (I am not much of a techie) their material suggests is similar to Safari 5, very fast, some very nice tab features. So both these browsers satisfy my requirements.

Hello,

Tough situation, those browsers mentioned are for PPC Macs, but can run under Rosetts emulation on Intel Macs.

Some other browsers that may work... or not...

SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Also OmniWeb & iCab.

PS. feel free to start a new question if none of that helps.

Oh, any reason you don't want to install 10.6.8 for $20 ?

I have tried all the browsers mentioned here but have returned to Safari for speed. I don't use Tiger much any more - the following was developed for Leopard but probably works on Tiger.

I start my Mac once a day - Safari is started with the following AppleScript application in my login items:

tellapplication"Safari"toquit

delay5

do shell script "defaults write -app safari 'NSWindow Frame BrowserWindowFrame' '0 72 1100 930 0 0 1280 1002'; rm -Rf ~/Library/Safari/LocalStorage; rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari"

tellapplication"Safari"

activate

closewindow1

endtell

tell application "System Events"

tell process "Safari"

click menu item "Reset Safari…" of menu "Safari" of menu bar 1

clickbutton"Reset"ofwindow1

endtell

endtell

My Reset Safari options are as follows:

User uploaded file

History is set to 7 days.

I do not use tabs, RSS, plugins, fraudulent sites or extensions.

I use a fast DNS server such as 8.8.8.8

My DNS cache is automatically cleared once a day.

I have updated my Leopard script as below. It has not been tested on Tiger.

do shell script "defaults write -app safari 'NSWindow Frame BrowserWindowFrame' '0 72 1100 930 0 0 1280 1002'; rm -Rf ~/Library/Safari/LocalStorage; rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari"

tellapplication"Safari"

activate

closewindow1

endtell

tell application "System Events"

tell process "Safari"

click menu item "Reset Safari…" of menu "Safari" of menu bar 1

clickbutton"Reset"ofwindow1

endtell

endtell
