No Wifi connection using a SMC wireless router, type SMCWBR14S-N2

My Iphone and Ipad connect perfectly to the router. Yesterday I have bought my MacBook pro and try to connect it with the wireless router.

The MacBook does not connect to the router, it even does not see the router in the list of availablre networks (although broadcast = on)

I can connect the router through ethernet but that is not what I want. Who has an clue to solve this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

In System Preferences-Network ensure that your wi-fi network is at the top of the list if you intend for this to be your primary means of accessing the network. Then click the button to turn wi-fi off, then back on again. If it doesn't show up after that then select Join other network from the wi-fi icon on the menu bar.

If your wireless card in the MBP is not seeing ANY WiFi networks, anywhere (which is what it sounds like), then you may have a bad wireless card in the MBP.


There are no conflicts between any name brand wireless router and the wireless cards used in MBPs.


So I think you need to take it in and have it fixed, under warranty (if it is still in the original or extended care warranty).

That is just the strange thing..... it sees other networks, but everytime with changes in the list (possibly due routers close to the receivable range). It is a new MacBook (bought it yesterday)... at the moment I am a bit dissapointed 😕 because I thought it would be a simple action to get it working (as it was with my Iphone and Ipad and several windows laptops). I think I follow your suggestion and go back with the MacBook to the shop, thanks for helping sofar

Have you tried connecting to another network? Does it even show other networks that may be being picked up from neighbours? Is it just your router that it can't find? Try taking it to a cafe or other public place that has free wi-fi and see if you can connect there. If you cannot see any network, then like Shootis007 says, the wifi in you MBP may be faulty.

Try setting your router to Auto on the broadcast channel. Could be the channel it is broadcasting on is being drowned out by a near router that is on the same channel.


As it is seeing other networks I doubt the card is faulty in any way so going back to the store or Apple care center won't do you any good.


Make sure the router is set to Broadcast the SSID. Make sure there is NO MAC filtering setup on the router, WiFi or Ethernet ports. That is usually one setting on the router independant of wired or wireless.


Change the SSID and make sure you click the Apply button on the routers interface to complete the change of that setting (Leave password/key the same).


This is just to check. Make sure the router is set to hand out more IP addresses then you have computers connecting to it from either wireless or wired, DHCP setting.


Some of these suggestions are just a shot in the dark as even if some of those setting were enabled you should still see the SSID (that is IF it really is being broadcast.


What happens if you Wire the MBP to the router? Do you get an IP address and can you browse the internet?

Tried your suggestions, nothing worked...... but finally I have got it working through the following action:

I have switched off the wireless function, logged out from my router, logge in again, switched on the wireless function again and guess what, the network appears in the MBP!

This is what our work sometimes makes difficult 🙂 and exiting. Thanks for your help anyway
