I have hundred of photos on a hard drive and want to transfer them onto my new imac. How do I do this please? I am totally new to apple operating system, used windows for 15 years.....

Drag and drop?
Is this hard drive a standalone drive or the hard drive in another computer?
If it's the former have you tried connecting the external hard drive to the iMac via USB, assuming that's an option?
Once connected you should be able to copy them across by dragging and dropping, either directly onto iPhoto, or you may want to initially copy them into a folder on the iMac's desktop and bring them into iPhoto gradually as you organise them.
The hard drive is stand alone, usb. I have plugged the hard drive in the back. The hard drive does not appear anywhere?? Sorry for being so dumb but I am verry new to apple and quite old in years.....
OK the hard disk is connected and powered on, if you click on the desktop and from the menu bar go to Finder>Preferences>Sidebar tab, at the bottom where is says Devices do you have ticks against Hard disks, External disk, CDs, DVDs and iPods. If not, tick them.
Click on the desktop and select File>New Finder Window - is the disk now listed on the left under Devices?
yes a new device "Macintosh" device is listed, When i click on that 5 folders are shown, Applications, Users, Library , system, and users guides and info. No sign of photos etc....????

I was hoping that in addition to that there should be another device listed, namely the USB External HD you've got plugged into the USB port. It should show up something like this:
I have discovered by talking to a mate if I plug both usb connections from my hard drive (they are in tandem), the hard drive device shows up??
