Sometimes using an iPhone App you will be unexpectedly switch to a new App, e.g. Safari or iTunes Store.
Is there a "back button" of some sort on the iPhone so you can go back *exactly* where you were before?

Sorry, no. You misunderstand.
I mean you are using an App and it calls another one, like email or safari, but when you get in them you can't go back to where you were, like a "back button" in safari.
Double tap the home key. This will bring up the list of recently used apps. The one on the far left is the last app you were in. Tap it.

That often does not take you back to where you were before.
There is no way to move back to the exact place you were in in the calling application from a called app. They are sandboxed. If the calling app doesn't "keep your place" for you, then you can't do it. Blame the app or website developer. The problem is in how they implemented the call.
Well, like a browser, there should be a Go Back button. It's a basic human interface dictum for over 40 yrs now, although Apple has for years been the worst offender in breaking their own rules.
