Verizon fios and apple tv problems?

I recently purchased an apple tv 2. I have Verizon fios cable being that verizon uses an hdmi in order to view channels I had to buy an hdmi spliter so that i could connect both verizon and appletv. After a few strugles I was able to connect both and get the running. My only problem is that when I switch to verizon the tv channel is there but there is no audio. However, when i swtich to apple tv I can hear music and watch videos perfectly...HELP?!?!?
