Use caution when saving a .png file with a tranparent background!

Use caution when saving a .png file with a transparent image, you could expose any previously deleted images, by accident.

How could this happen?:

Suppose you've just received an email with a *.png file that has a tranparent backgroud, and you just happen to save the image to your iPhone, with the intention of showing it to business partner, the next time you meet.

When that time rolls around, you call (him/her) over, and saw "hey look at this", as you start navigating through your phone, and enter the (default) Photo application on your iOS.

Suddenly, you are at the default view (where you can see and select either your 'Camera Roll', or Photo Library, or any other library you may have created)... When you suddenly notice that the last picture saved (the logo) to your camera roll (default location when saving images) is showing the *.png file, plus an image that you you had previously deleted.. Oops, now wasn't that embarrassing.

Things that need to be in place to make this happen:

  • You need to have previously deleted items from your "camera roll"; pictures
  • Your last saved image needs to be one with a transparent background. (I discovered this with a .png file)

Tested, and repeated on:

3G (iOS unknown)

3GS (iOS unknow)

4G (iOS 4.2.1)

4G (iOS 5.01)

Generally speaking this shouldn't be a problem for folks, but it could certainly lead to "you have splaining to do lucy" moments... Scenarios of how this could happen need not be included, simply use your imagination.

iPhone 4, iOS 4.2
