I am constantly getting outgoing mail stuck in outbox with outgoing servers showing offline - sometimes getting an email out is utterly futile
what is the solution?
it seems even worse after moving to Lion
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)
Same issue... I note that if a document is attached I receive an alert informing "cannot send message using the server"; for a message without attachement it works fine. Someone can help us?
I now have the same problem with an Air and Mountain Lion!

no issues until recently when the incoming mail from my internet providers primary mail box, joe@primary.net, does not always show up in my "primary" mailbox. it does show up in the aggregated "inbox" mailbox. i have done a mail box rebuild to no avail. have preferences been changed? - have i inadvertantly changed them?
i am now running os 10.7.5 and mail version 5.3. verizon fios is my internet provider.
about the time of the issue start, i renewed verizon fios with the same features and services, but the internet speed increased substantially. i did not change any fios adaptations or preferences - to my knowledge.

this is happening to me since getting a new imac OSX 10.9.1 it is driving me absolutely mad. 😠😠ðŸ˜
It's happening to me too! You'd think there would be instructions in apple support since many people have had this problem.
Yes. Me too. More often with attachments. closing and reopening Mail does seem to "unclogg" things and then the message goes out, but major pain when you have a normal day of 20-30 emails that need to be sent out. Likely others that send out many more so........
