How do I get Kindle samples to download?

I've been downloading samples and whole books from Kindle for over a year. When I updated the Kindle app a few months ago (the version without the store icon) I started having problems. No sample seems to want to download any more. I'm reluctant to outrightly buy anything in case they don't download either. I've updated the iPad OS in case the app and OS weren't fitting together well, but that hasn't changed anything. Any ideas as to how to fix this?

I can't comment on the sampes issue. However, I regularly buy things for my Kindle app. When you buy something through the Amazon website, there's a box where you can select where you want the purchase to go (if you have more than one registered device). Also, once you've purchased something, it's easy to download directly to your iPad through the Kindle App. Just select it from the Archived Items.
