Open iTunes
choose the iphone in 'devices'
click the Apps tab

Look at the file sharing heading and select Garageband - your song should appear in "garageband documents"

(if not - go back to the iphone and "share song via iTunes" as band format)

Then - you will like this - highlight the song and...... drag it to your desktop.

So obvious i missed it!
