Q: New to mac - Problem with storing, importing and renaming photos

hi, i am new to mac. having moved my almost 30,000 photos to new mac, i can't figure out best way to store and organize these. Please help. I can't simply import, rename and put in respective folder by month name etc as i cud do in pc.

I have read many posts and articles but still cant figure it.

Using windows, whenver i connected by iphone or camers, i was able to import photos to any designated folder, rename all photos for easy ref and then view as i like.

But here we have photos folder and iphoto or image capture, but no all in one solution. If i import and store photo in iphoto, it will store in a different manner, i cant rename and then in photos folder, i cant rename but can organize. However after importing, cant delete thru preview.

Image capture can specify and spefici folder but can delete. also can not rename it.

I am sure there must be many like me migrated from pc to mac and facing these stupid issues.

Thanks.

If all your photos are organized on your Windows computer just the way you'd like them organized on your Mac, all you have to do is manually copy the Pictures folder from the PC to the Mac and forget about using iPhoto at all.

Surely, by this time you must already have a system, right?

I can't simply import, rename and put in respective folder by month name

    Why not?

Using windows, whenver i connected by iphone or camers, i was able to import photos

    Using what application?

But here we have photos folder

    As opposed to "My Pictures"?

    iphoto

No, you didn't have it in Win, but you probably shouldn't try to use iPhoto anyway. Remember, many apps like that are geared towards the average user. I'm an average user, and I don't have even 1/10th of your photos. iPhoto would probably be far too slow and inefficient with 30k pics. You need to look for a more professional photo manager. Maybe you should look at apps like PhotoSweeper or PhotoMechanic; definitely you should check photo forums to see what pros are using. "put in respective folder by month name" doesn't cut it with such a collection -- you need to think EXIF.

    thanks eww

indeed i have already copies but issue is with new photos which i am transferring from iphone or camera. what i want is simple way to import photos in respective folder, rename it as i like and simply remove it from my camera or phone......but this is not happending...have tried iphoto to import and then it prompts u to delete which is better but cant do it if dont use iphone but preview and store in the pictures folder. some one said using automator but thats too complicated....it should b very simple as when u connect phone or camera or memory card, it should prompt u what to do but nothing happends.

I hope I'm understanding correctly what your problem is. This what I suspect is bothering you:

You connect a camera to your Mac and iPhoto opens, so you think you have to use it to import your pictures, and then it doesn't permit the kind of organization you're accustomed to using. That's true -- it doesn't. But it's NOT true that you have to use it. Just choose Quit from the iPhoto menu.

Instead of importing pictures into iPhoto or anything else, just drag them from your camera card's Finder window to whatever folder you want to keep them in. You can do all your organizing and filing right in the Finder (the equivalent of Windows Explorer) and all your viewing in Preview (or any of dozens of other viewing apps, some of them free).

If your memory card doesn't appear on the desktop when you connect it to the Mac, go to Finder > Preferences> General and tick all the checkboxes under "Show these items on the desktop".

No, you don't. You want your procedure to manage and store your photos. (Maybe it seems simple to you, but it doesn't to me; using iPhoto seems much simpler to me.) And iPhoto doesn't seem to accommodate it. Fair enough -- but you don't have to use iPhoto. If eww guessed right, and that's what's bothering you, then you can even go one step beyond quitting.

iPhoto > Preferences > General > Connecting camera opens > No application

And neither iPhoto nor ImageCapture will launch when you attach the camera.

simple way to import photos in respective folder, rename it as i like and simply remove it from my camera or phone

And my question was, "Using what application?" This was not rhetorical. If you tell us what application you used on Win, we will very likely be able to tell you what application to use on Mac.

i was quite good in pc but here in mac its driving me crazy....for so simple things

How many books on using a Mac have you read? How many tutorials have you tried?
