command+tilde window switching not working well in Lion

I know it's a real problem. Just like all the other problems posted on this and all Apple forums. I was making light of that saying.

I don't think this is a Lion issue. Have the same problem with a Snow Leopard machine.

Really annoying in Outlook to lose the scroll between windows shortcut.

Odd thing is my iMac is fine, but it's stopped working on my MacBook Pro, yet they're pretty much identical installations and stages of latest updates.

I had the same issue until I read this post. Go to Sytem Preferences:Hardware:Keyboard:Keyboard Shottcuts:

Restore Defaults

Most likely turned it off once "Mission Control" was active.....

I had the same problem and this last comment was the key for me. Restoring it didn't help however:

I went to that place and i changed the shortcut key to alt-' (to me the key above the tab, on the left side) this works fine!

Hey, just remembered. I used ctrl + tilde to go between tabs. That doesn't work anymore. It is, like you said, ctrl+tab. But, I'd never used that before. Strange. My ctrl+tilde does work to go between windows ~ sorry I cannot imagine why yours does not. Are you sure, sure, that you are definitely hitting the right keys? Try command, option/alt, ctrl and/or fn with tab - otherwise, try deleting your web browsers and reinstalling or upgrade. Sorry not more helpful, but don't give up and I will keep pondering as well...

Peter, just found this thread - I'm having the same issue. Very frustrating. Have you found a source of the problem, or even better - a solution?

Restoring defaults in keyboard preferences did not make a difference to me.

Am running 10.7.3 on an iMac, six months old.

I had the same problem since Snow Leopard, then Lion and now in Mountain Lion; but reading this thread gave me a hint.

I checked under System Preferences > Keyboard and found that Keyboard and Text Input > Move focus to next window was unchecked.

Once I checked the item, my Cmd ` started working as before.

Hi Raj.. I have the same problem as Peter does. "Command ~" works for all other apps but Safari. I use an Intel (core i5) based mac running OSX 10.7.4. I checked that too. The option is checked and still it doesnt work.

Ram - You may want to check if there are any plugins or extensions in Safari that may have Cmd ` assigned to it.

Raj - Thanks for the quick response. Now, how do I find out if other plug-ins or extensions are using it? I have never changed any default settings... at least w.r.t keyboard shortcuts.

I use terminal a lot and not having this combination of keys working since I installed Lion (on MBP Retina) was driving me MAD. I finally found out that if I change my keyboard layout to "US" it works, but then in "US-International" (which I need) it does not.

Maybe that's the reason why so few people where answering: Most have their keyboard layout as "US" so they're not affected, but the problem is real and is not a configuration issue as I've even tried to re-map the keys while in "international" mode and it did not work.

I guess the only workaround will be to remap the keys to something that works in both modes. Will require some brain rewiring from my part.

Anyway this is definitively a bug in Lion OS/X.

I don't really think any of these suggestions have worked for me.

this problem happens consistently for me when one of the windows is streaming video like netflix.
