I recently purchased OSX Lion for my MacBook Pro. Do i also need to upgrade from iPhoto 09 to iPhoto 11 to make photo stream work? I have already paid for the OSX upgrade so surely i don't need to buy another one!

Thanks, as far as i know i have iPhoto 09. Can this be upgraded to 9.2 or do i have to buy a whole new iPhoto?
Launch iPhoto. From the menu bar at the top of your screen click iPhoto > About iPhoto
What version number does it say?
Version 8.1.2

Then you do need to upgrade to iPhoto 9 to use Photo Strream with an iCloud account setup.
iPhoto can be purchased from the App Store.
You can access the App Store either from your Apple menu, the App Store icon in your Dock, or your Applications folder.
