Safari adds *.xml extension to some downloads

Hey there,

since using mainly my new MBA with Lion preinstalled I found the following error. When I'm downloading *.nzb files from the website (w*w.usenetrevolution.info) the will get saved in Downloads as *.nzb.xml. Even if I do a right click --> save as (sorry for the translation, i'm using lion in german language) a small window will open where i can choose where to download and give it a name; the standard here is still the *.nzb without the xml extension. But if i press save the *.xml extension will get added.

Also bizarre is, that if I download *.nzb files for example from binsearch.info; all works fine. How can i change the behaviour of safari, because with firefox the *.nzb download from both pages works without any hickups.

Best regards

Are you using a third party Safari add on or plugin because the Safari browser for Mac does not offer any alternatives to where files are downloaded. Everything goes to the Downloads folder automatically.

Check Safari > Preferences - Extensions

It sometimes happens when images are dragged to the desktop.

If you control-click and choose 'save image to' or 'save image as' it shouldn't happen.

But this is nothing new!

Safari: Downloaded file's filename may have an additional extension

That's from June 11, 2007!

Working from my defective memory, this happened to me, but stopped if I unchecked 'Open safe files after downloading' in Safari Preferences/General.

At least I think that's how I stopped it - it hasn't happened since!

This happens even on a complete fresh installation of Lion! Doesn't change anything when i remove the plist file 😟

And it's regarding NZB files. In preferences 'Open safe files after downloading' is unchecked. It worked fine with Safari under Snow Leopard (maybe an older version) and it works fine with firefox under Lion. So it has definitly something todo with a new safari update.
