the video quality on facetime is poor, are there any suggestions to fix this

Try uninstalling your current copy of the Flash plugin then reinstall new > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
And make sure and empty your browser cache.
Unless your iMac is a Mid-2011 model, the built-in camera is not a high res model. The 2011 models changed from an iSight camera to a "Facetime HD" camera with higher res.
(0) Broadband internet is required for good FT video. You can check your broadband speed using http://speedtest.net/
(1) Per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3097, use good (meaning very bright, single-source) light.
Restart Mac and record a short clip in full sunlight. View the clip inside (not in sunlight) to see the best quality your Mac can give.

The two Apple articles above apply whether your camera is called an "iSight" or one of the newest built-in cams that Apple has named "FaceTime HD" cameras.
